And the voice in his head had to keep reassuring him:ĭo you hear me, do you feel me? We gon' be alright About how the real world kept trying to fuck his shit up, and kept needing to scream to cope. So to me, Alright was a song about a rapper stuck in his hotel room, screaming in his own head about his demons and the problems he couldn't cope with. Very much felt like an inner voice vs an outer voice, at least to me, an extremely volatile inner conflict I could completely relate too. I loved the song Swimming Pools, and a completely uninformed view on the song, loved how he had multiple voices that would talk to each other almost, sometimes even appearing to talk to "Kendrick". I was simply a Kendrick fan through finding his stuff on Spotify. Now, I had never heard this song before finding it on Spotify, had never even seen the music video. I don't think I could count how many times I needed it. The amount of times on an empty bus ride home, or the middle of rush hour on the subway, or at home alone I would play this song and just focus on the lyrics was kind of crazy. It was the only song that seemed to understand and try to help. Crying like a little child as I tried to get those fucking thoughts out of my head. For an entire hour and a half commute on transit, this was all I listened too once.

Whenever my head would start going to that place, I would throw this song on, and just literally play it on loop, full blast, until I got out of the funk. Long story short, a complete misunderstanding of Kendrick Lamar's song 'Alright' helped me cope with my depression, and in all honesty kept me from suicide as an option more then once. When his album launched, read some of the reviews on here and gave it a listen. But, I would hear about his stuff from this community, and that's kind of how this all started. I'm a metal head, a rock guy - hip hop has been a relatively recent part of my music life. My only understanding of Kendrick's music either came through small discussion with friends, or listening to his stuff on Spotify. I wasn't sure where to post this, here on in r/hiphopheads - but I felt like maybe a cool conversation about the interpretation of rap could come from this too.įull disclosure, I'm a white, mid 20's Canadian guy from Ontario. It's kind of a post to either start a discussion, or just thank an artist for kind of saving my life. So I've been wanting to write this for a very, very long time now.
